The Reality Behind Fake Media
Building the Creative Vision for Behind the Grid

in a world where social media blurs the line between reality and illusion, Behind the Grid is an advertising campaign that exposes the dangers of fake media and its impact on adolescents. This campaign raises awareness about misinformation and unrealistic beauty standards.
Through powerful visuals, Behind the Grid highlights reality by showcasing confident women, emphasising that natural beauty is both normal and beautiful.
A study by the Oxford Internet Institute found that girls aged 11-13 and boys aged 14-15 experience a negative link between social media use and life satisfaction, suggesting that exposure to unrealistic portrayals and misinformation during these developmental periods can affect well-being.
We began brainstorming ideas with the goal of creating something interactive for the audience. Initially, we came up with a puzzle-style poster, allowing the audience to engage with it and gradually uncover the truth.
We began developing the campaign by testing various ideas and names. Eventually, we settled on using "the grid" as a symbol of an Instagram grid. Additionally, we decided to remove the black-and-white theme, as it unintentionally suggested that "natural" equates to "bad," which contradicted our message. We also explored Rare Beauty and its campaign Rare Impact
When we decided to align our campaign with Rare Beauty, we researched the brand's identity, including its colors, fonts, Instagram presence, past campaigns, and how it conveys its message.

After studying the brand, we designed posters that fit both Rare Beauty’s identity and our campaign. Behind the Grid symbolized what lies beyond the Instagram grid, featuring diverse models to highlight different issues.
We included a link to the Rare Impact campaign and a key fact to engage the audience. Instead of black and white, we used a filter effect that fades to reveal the truth. We also used Figma to prototype interactive posters where the real and edited images slowly uncover.
